What type of Play Matta™ surfacing should I choose?
You need to consider
who will be using the surfacing (small children, older children or adults); what you want it to achieve (e.g. impact absorption, ground retention); the situation (indoors, outdoors, or a transition area); what you want the surfacing to look like (colors, textures, perforated or solid surface).
Here is a summary of how the Play Matta™ Rebound range interfaces with the other Play Matta™ products:
- The Play Matta™ Rebound Smooth Top tile is designed for all-age indoor playgrounds and fitness areas where impact absorption and traction (with ease of cleaning) are the requirements. The Smooth Top tile can be joined to the Rebound Rubber, Carpet and Turf tiles and the Play Matta™ Original tile.
- The Play Matta™ Original System is designed specifically for outdoor playgrounds where good impact absorption is the priority (Play Matta™ Rebound Rubber, Carpet and Turf are alternatives and can be joined to the Play Matta™ Original tile).
- The Play Matta™ Safety™ System
is designed for outdoor playgrounds and areas requiring ground retention (Play Matta™ Rebound Rubber, Carpet and Turf are alternatives and can all be joined to the Play Matta™ Safety™ tile).
- The portable Play Matta™ Kidz range is designed specifically for young children playing indoors or on small outdoor play areas.
All sites are different and our Play Matta™ representatives are happy to advise which product or combination of products would best fulfill your needs.
Can we get documentation to prove that the playground meets the fall height standards?
Yes, a Certificate of Compliance is supplied when the installation is complete. This certification is backed by independent testing of the impact attenuation performance of the Play Matta™ Systems. Other aspects of the ASTM Standards, such as skid resistance and fire resistance depend on the type of surfacing on the Rebound tile and the location of the installation itself. Contact your Play Matta™ representative for advice.
Are the mats secure and vandal proof?
All mats are glued or welded together. Around the perimeter of the site, purpose-designed fixing pins are used to secure the mats to the surface. The mats are very difficult to cut, but as with any product that is left unattended, if vandals really want to cause damage they will ultimately succeed. However, any vandalized mats can be easily replaced or cleaned and the playground restored to its original condition. Broken glass can be picked up by hand and small shards removed with a vacuum cleaner. Graffiti on the Rebound Smooth Top tiles can be removed using standard graffiti removal products. Matta Res-Q, a specially formulated spot cleaner, is effective on stubborn marks.
What is wrong with using wood mulch?
Wood mulch, wool chips and engineered wood fiber are effective impact protection products as long as you maintain the required thickness (a minimum of 9 inches). It will need to be turned over regularly to keep it loose and uncompacted and you will need to add more material at a later date as it tends to break down and disappear from the site over time. The supplier of the material should be able to provide evidence that it does not contain chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood products. Other issues with this type of loose fill product are contamination (e.g. animal droppings); and sharp objects that become buried in the material (broken glass, sharp stones and even syringes). ‘Nuisance’ issues include material getting inside children’s footwear; children’s skin and clothing getting dirty, especially when the material is wet and has started to break down; material getting tracked indoors; and material being washed off the playground in heavy rain. As a general rule of thumb, you will probably need to replace all the material in the site after two years.
Can the matting systems be moved and re-used at another site?
The interlocking, modular nature of the mats allows for the entire system to be lifted and re-laid on a new site. If the mats have been cut to accommodate posts you will need to purchase a few replacement mats. If shock pads are used some of these may be damaged in the lifting process and require replacement.
Can the Play Matta™ Rebound mats be joined to other Play Matta™ tiles?
Yes, Play Matta™ Rebound and Play Matta™ Safety™ tiles are interlockable and it is quite common to have them joined at the perimeter of the Rebound surfacing to form a ground retention strip. Play Matta™ Original mats can also be joined to our Rebound mats.
What are the mats made out of?
All Play Matta™ Rebound mats are made from recycled plastic with a choice of surface (rubber, carpet, synthetic turf) and the underlying shock pads are made from recycled tire rubber sourced from recycling industry partners.
My playground is an awkward shape. How do I measure it accurately?
Please see our Guide to Measuring Playgrounds in the Printable Documents Section.
Do the mats get hot?
Any surface that people walk on – concrete paving, sand at the beach, bare dirt, timber decking – will get hot in strong sunlight, although some colors and surfaces will absorb more heat than others. In most playground installations, the Play Matta™ surfacing will not get as hot as the equipment the children are playing on. Some of our early childhood customers introduce water play on the Play Matta™ surfacing when the equipment is too hot to use.
Do the mats expand and contract in the heat?
The Play Matta™ Rebound tiles designed for outdoor use (Rebound Turf, Rubber and Carpet) are all perforated, although the surface gives a solid appearance. This allows for the natural expansion and contraction that occurs with changing temperatures. This movement can cause other types of surfacing to crack and disintegrate or buckle in the heat and split in the cold. The design of Play Matta™ Rebound and specific protocols for installation ensures that Play Matta™ playgrounds can safely expand and contract in most climatic conditions with no detrimental effects.
What happens to the surfacing in heavy rain?
The Play Matta™ Rebound Turf and Carpet Systems are designed to enable water to flow through the surfacing and out to the perimeter of the playground. The mats themselves are perforated and have channels on the underside and the underlying geotextile weed barrier and the shock pads themselves are water permeable. Of course the Play Matta™ Original System is the ultimate in free-draining and quick-drying surfacing for playgrounds.
Can Play Matta™ Rebound be installed over concrete or asphalt?
Yes. Play Matta™ achieves excellent Critical Fall Height results regardless of the underlying surface. Some work on the surface may be needed to repair damaged areas and to ensure the surface is level. Whatever the surface (concrete, asphalt, old poured-in-place surfacing, grass, bark, sand), good base preparation is a ‘must’ for the surfacing to stay looking good in the years to come. Our Certified Installers are trained in the detailed protocols for installing Play Matta™ in each of these situations.
Can we do some of the work ourselves?
Yes, Matta Products prepares a ‘Scope of Work’ for each installation and some of the items to do with base preparation can be carried out by the customer, although we strongly recommend that this be supervised by a Certified Play Matta™ Installer. The installation of the mats themselves needs to be done by the installer, with possible contribution of voluntary labor from the customer.
Can we have a supervised community build?
Yes, some aspects of the base preparation can be done by a group of volunteers. We can arrange to make one of our installers available to supervise the project on an agreed date.
Can we work on a wet day?
Yes, all aspects of the job can be carried out in the wet, except for the final gluing of the mats.
