Should we be using Play Matta™ Kidz™ in our play area, or one of the other Play Matta™ products?
The Play Matta™ Kidz™ range is specially designed for small children who are using low and often portable equipment. The 'open' and 'closed' surface options make it suitable for either indoor
or smaller outdoor play areas, as well as in 'transition' situations, such as partially roofed decks.
While the use of shock pads under Kidz™ tiles is an option, the Play Matta™ Original and the Rebound Systems are specifically designed for use under higher, permanently-fixed playground equipment which requires greater impact attenuation.
Can the matting systems be moved and reused at another site?
Even where Play Matta™ Kidz™ surfacing is secured around the edges, the interlocking modular nature of the mats allows for the entire system to be lifted and re-laid on a new site. The one thing to keep in mind is, if the mats have been cut around posts, you may need to purchase a few replacement tiles to accommodate this. The same applies to the Play Matta™ Original and Rebound tiles. Of course, when the Kidz™ tiles are not fixed to the floor, it is a simple matter to roll them up and transport them to another site.
How easy is it to damage the mats?
While the Play Matta™ Kidz™ tiles are smaller and lighter than the Play Matta Original tiles, they have the same robust construction and are difficult to vandalize. As with any product that is left unattended, if people really want to cause damage they will ultimately succeed. However, any damaged tiles can be easily replaced. Graffiti can be treated with ordinary graffiti removal products, and more stubborn marks removed with Matta Res-Q, available through your Play Matta™ representative.
Can we get documentation to prove that the playground meets the fall height standards?
Yes, a Certificate of Compliance can be supplied indicating the Critical Fall Height of the Play Matta™ Kidz™ System being used. This certification is backed by independent testing. Play Matta™ complies with all applicable sections of the ASTM Standards.
What is wrong with using bark?
Bark mulch, wood chips and similar loose fill products are effective impact protection products as long as you maintain the required thickness (approximately 9 inches). It will need to be turned over regularly to keep it loose and uncompacted and you will need to add more bark at a later date as it tends to break down and disappear from the site over time. Other issues with this type of loose fill product are the fact that children can put pieces in their mouths; there is no guarantee that the material came from a safe source; contamination (e.g. animal droppings); and sharp objects that become buried in the material (broken glass, sharp stones and even syringes). ‘Nuisance’ issues include material getting inside children’s footwear; children’s skin and clothing getting dirty, especially when the material is wet and has started to break down; material getting tracked indoors; and material being washed off the play area in heavy rain. As a general rule of thumb, you will probably need to replace all the material in the site after two years.
What are the mats made out of?
The mats are made from recycled plastic and the underlying shock pads (if these are used) are made from recycled rubber sourced from recycling industry partners.

Do the mats get hot in the sun?
Any surface that children walk on – concrete paving, sand at the beach, bare dirt, timber decking – will get hot in strong sunlight, although some colors will absorb more heat than others. With Play Matta™, the lighter shades of the recycled colors – green, blue and grey – are the coolest colors. The perforated design of Play Matta™ Kidz™ allows quicker cooling than other solid surfaces such as wetpour, rubber tiles and asphalt, particularly if a breeze is blowing. The tile perforations decrease the surface area exposed to radiant energy while increasing the total surface area of each tile. This allows more efficient heat dissipation through air contact and air-flow through the play surface. In most cases, the Play Matta™ surfacing will not get as hot as the equipment the children are playing on. Some of our early childhood customers introduce water play on the Play Matta™ surfacing when the equipment is too hot to use.
How slippery are the mats?
The textured surface of Play Matta™ Kidz™ tiles is designed to minimize slips and falls and to comply with the ASTM Standards regarding slip resistance. In addition, the design ensures that the surface is not too ‘grippy’, a common cause of long-bone injuries in young children. As with any surface that people walk on, the ‘slipperiness’ and ‘grippiness’ (coefficient of friction) experienced will depend on the type of footwear used and will change when the surface is wet. With Play Matta™ tiles the textured surface prevents the tiles from becoming overly ‘slick’ in the wet. The tiles drain freely so tend not to stay wet for long.
What happens to the Kidz™ surfacing in heavy rain?
The Play Matta™ Kidz™ open tiles and the shock pads (if used) are designed to enable water to quickly flow through the surfacing and out to the perimeter of the playground. The shock pads are water permeable and the tiles are perforated and have channels on the underside, so water does not pool on the surface. The children can resume playing as soon as the rain stops.
